How Bayer Built a Multilingual Agri Marketplace With Retailer-Led Fulfilment for Farmers

Powering a centrally managed agri marketplace with multilingual commerce, retailer operations, and fulfilment workflows on StoreHippo

About Bayer

Bayer is a global life sciences company with around 150 years of experience in science and innovation. Through its Crop Science business, the company works with farmers and agricultural partners, offering crop protection products and other agri-inputs across markets worldwide.

In India, Bayer wanted to bring its established retailer-led distribution model online and make it easier for farmers to discover and purchase products digitally. The vision was to create a marketplace where farmers could buy Bayer products as well as products from other brands through authorised retailers serving their region.

But agricultural ecommerce needed more than a standard online catalogue and checkout journey. Product availability varied by location, farmers needed to see products relevant to their PIN code, and orders had to be fulfilled by authorised retailers serving those areas. Bayer also needed to manage a growing retailer network while retaining central control over the marketplace.

Bayer partnered with StoreHippo to build a multilingual B2C multi-vendor marketplace around these regional buying and retailer-led fulfilment requirements. With StoreHippo, Bayer could bring farmer buying, retailer management, location-based product availability, and marketplace operations together on one connected commerce platform.

Explore how Bayer built a multilingual agri marketplace around local product availability, authorised retailer fulfilment, and its expanding digital commerce network in India.

Bayer’s Company Profile

Industry: Agriculture / Crop Science / Agri-inputs

Locations: Pan-India

Use Case: B2C Multilingual, Multi-Vendor Marketplace With Retailer-Powered Fulfilment

Challenge - Bringing Bayer’s Retailer-Led Agri Commerce Model Online

Bayer needed to bring farmer buying online without disrupting the retailer-led model already working across different regions. The challenge was to create a connected marketplace that could stay locally relevant while giving Bayer and its retailers the right level of control.

The key challenges were:

  • Taking the Retailer Network Online - Bayer needed to create a digital buying journey for farmers while keeping authorised retailers at the centre of how products were sold and fulfilled.
  • Showing Farmers the Right Products for Their Location - Product availability varied by region, so farmers needed to see only the products relevant to their PIN code and local market.
  • Keeping Orders Connected to Local Retailers - The buying journey needed to align with Bayer’s existing distribution model, routing orders to the authorised retailers responsible for each area.
  • Balancing Central Control With Retailer Flexibility - Bayer needed visibility and control across the multi-vendor marketplace, while retailers still had to manage their own products, pricing, inventory, orders, and fulfilment.
  • Serving Farmers Across Regional Markets - With the marketplace operating across different states, the buying experience needed to work across languages and local customer requirements.
  • Making Commerce Part of the Existing FarmRise Journey - Bayer already had a mobile app, FarmRise. The marketplace needed to fit naturally into that app ecosystem instead of becoming a separate digital experience.
  • Supporting Bayer-Specific Business Workflows - Bayer also had several operational requirements that went beyond a standard marketplace setup. Retailer dashboards, access controls, platform fees, payments, promotions, cancellation journeys, product data, taxation, and storefront experiences all needed to reflect Bayer’s own way of working.
  • Preparing the Marketplace for Wider Expansion - With operations starting across selected states, Bayer needed a setup that could support more retailers, locations, products, and farmer transactions as the marketplace expanded.

Bayer needed a marketplace that could bring its local, retailer-led distribution model online without losing the regional relevance, retailer relationships, and operational control that made the model work in the first place.

Custom Agri Marketplace Solution: StoreHippo’s Connected Commerce Ecosystem for Bayer

StoreHippo helped Bayer transition its retailer-led distribution model into a connected multi vendor marketplace built around regional buying, local fulfilment, and central marketplace control.

Built on StoreHippo’s native marketplace capabilities, multilingual commerce, location-based workflows, API-first architecture, and customisable framework, the solution transformed Bayer’s specific business and operational requirements.

Here is how Bayer built its digital agri marketplace with StoreHippo:

1. Retailer Network-Led Marketplace for Bayer

Bayer wanted to create a unique ordering ecosystem where farmers could buy digitally, area managers could help punch orders for farmers in their region, and authorised retailers could then manage and fulfil those orders locally.

StoreHippo’s built-in Multi Vendor Marketplace and Seller Management capabilities enabled Bayer to manage this retailer ecosystem centrally while giving individual sellers control over their products, pricing, inventory, and orders.

This helped Bayer take its existing distribution model online while keeping area managers and authorised retailers closely connected to the farmer buying and fulfilment journey.

2. PIN Code-Based Buying With Local Retailer Fulfilment

Since Bayer’s authorised retailers served defined regions, product availability needed to reflect what was actually available in each area.

StoreHippo enabled location and PIN code-based product availability, helping Bayer show farmers the agri products available for the PIN code they entered and route orders to the authorised retailer responsible for fulfilment in that location.

This kept the digital buying journey closely aligned with how Bayer’s retailer network already worked on the ground.

3. One Master Catalogue, Flexible Retailer Operations

Bayer needed to keep product information consistent across the marketplace without taking day-to-day control away from individual retailers.

StoreHippo’s built-in Master Catalogue, Product & Catalogue Management, and Seller Management capabilities enabled Bayer to manage core product information centrally, while retailers could handle their mapped assortment, pricing, inventory, and orders.

This gave Bayer stronger catalogue control while allowing retailers to manage the products and operations relevant to their own markets.

4. Commerce Integrated Into the FarmRise App Experience

Bayer wanted farmers to access the marketplace through a digital channel they were already familiar with, rather than move to a separate commerce experience.

StoreHippo embedded the marketplace storefront within Bayer’s FarmRise mobile application, while the web storefront remained available independently. Custom integrations, including Multipass, helped make the journey smoother and more connected across these touchpoints.

This made digital buying easier to access while keeping the marketplace closely tied to Bayer’s existing farmer ecosystem.

5. Multilingual Buying for Regional Farmer Markets

As Bayer expanded the marketplace across different states, language also became an important part of making the buying journey easier for farmers.

StoreHippo’s built-in Multilingual Commerce capabilities enabled the marketplace in Hindi, English, and Gujarati, helping farmers browse and buy in a language they were more comfortable with.

6. A Marketplace Tailored Around Bayer’s Business Processes

Bayer’s marketplace had several operational requirements that went beyond what a standard multivendor setup could support out of the box.

StoreHippo’s flexible architecture and customisation capabilities made it possible to tailor retailer access, payments, promotions, orders, product data, taxation, and reporting around Bayer’s specific business processes.

Here’s how StoreHippo tailored the marketplace around Bayer’s needs:

  • Retailer dashboards were customised to surface orders, sales trends, return status, and relevant operational data, while keeping unnecessary controls out of view.
  • Roles and permissions were configured so retailers saw only the functions they needed for day-to-day operations.
  • Brand-based platform fees were handled through custom ledger rules, allowing seller charges to vary by product brand.
  • Razorpay payment flows were customised to manage system-generated email IDs and control email-field visibility during payment.
  • Promotions and coupons combined StoreHippo’s condition-based discount engine with cart-level offer visibility and custom messages for ineligible coupons.
  • Order workflows were adapted with mandatory cancellation reasons, return-status visibility, and other Bayer-specific controls.
  • Product, tax, and invoicing workflows were aligned around HSN data, product measurements, tax requirements, and historical ledger and invoice information.
  • Bayer’s Figma designs were implemented through front-end and theme customisation so the marketplace matched the brand’s own UX and visual guidelines.

These customisations helped Bayer shape the marketplace around the way its teams and retailers already worked, instead of forcing those processes into a standard ecommerce setup.

7. A Tailored Marketplace, Live in 1–2 Months

Bayer had a very specific marketplace to build, with regional buying rules, retailer-led fulfilment, integrations, and several custom workflows.

StoreHippo’s AI-powered commerce core and 300+ native features - including marketplace and seller management, catalogue and order management, payments, roles and permissions, analytics, and more - helped Bayer launch a customised marketplace in approximately 1–2 months.

The same connected setup now gives Bayer room to expand across more retailers, locations, products, and farmer markets, while continuing to refine retailer dashboards and customer journeys as new requirements emerge.

The Next Phase of Bayer’s Agri Commerce Journey

Bayer set out to make digital buying easier for farmers while keeping its trusted retailer network at the centre of the journey. That model is now live, with a marketplace built to grow across more regions, retailers, products, and farmer needs.

With new retailer dashboard enhancements and customer journey improvements already planned, the next phase is about building on that foundation.

StoreHippo is proud to be part of Bayer’s digital agri commerce journey and ready to support how the marketplace grows and evolves across new markets.
