Design by Humans (DBH) is a global internet-based e-commerce company specializing in screen printing and on-demand custom printing of phone cases, apparel and art prints. They have global community of over 15,000 passionate artists, who come together on their platform to create wearable art that tells a story using brilliant designs and detailed illustrations. The artists also help each other in all creative pursuits.

DBH has hosted design contests in collaboration with Warner Bros for The Dark Knight Rises, Blizzard Entertainment for Diablo III and Diablo III: Reaper of Souls and also partnered with Stone Blade Entertainment, Alliance, Evil Geniuses, SteelSeries and more in the past.


The Requirement:

  • Revamp their existing website completely to resolve various issues that were affecting performance.
  • Enable the site to handle the heavy traffic they were receiving.
  • Optimize the site properly to make best use of resources

  • Design an innovative solution for the creative company and its community of creative people from over 110 countries.
  • The site was initially created in ad hoc manner and did not adhere to coding standards.
  • Neither rigid framework nor any elaborate coding practices were followed during site development.
  • The unstructured coding made it difficult to introduce smallest changes to the website
  • Minimize downtime as the site had half a million users logged in and using it actively
  • Extensive planning to roll out changes with precision.

  • Manusis created a parallel system using a popular technology stack (LAMP) and a proven framework (Manu Framework) running on Amazon AWS stack.
  • Port data from the existing system (RoR/Postgres) to a new system (LAMP) without any significant downtime.
  • Improved site performance and speed significantly.
  • Sub-second performance was achieved for even the most complex pages.
  • Significant cost reduction as the entire application could run seamlessly from a couple of EC2 servers.
